About LHFS

We are a Connecticut educational-services public charity, founded in 2007 to develop community-based programs focused on local food systems and promotion of active, healthy lifestyles for kids and families. Our mission is to model and nurture learning experiences linking sustainable agriculture, CT-Grown food and active, healthy lifestyles. Our goal is to contribute to “human conservation”* by making a difference in childhood obesity prevention.

*A legacy worth investing in: “If we are to prevent physical degeneracy…we must begin with the children in the public schools. Their health should not only be guarded, but the training of their bodies is quite as important as the training of their minds. Mission Statement

Our foundation stones are community-based programs focused on sustainable, local food systems that are respectful of the physical environment in which we exist.
Our aim is to cultivate greater community by nurturing and supporting collaborative teaching and learning experiences, which connect and support sustainable agriculture, local food and active, healthy lifestyles.

Core Programs

Our foundation is a three-legged stool of core programs, recognizing that success happens through a multi-pronged approach that supports educating kids about healthful eating and physical activity.

  • Litchfield Hills Farm-Fresh Markets
  • Edible School/Educational Gardens
  • Rod Dixon’s KiDSMARATHON™ (In partnership with CT Association of Schools and KiDSMARATHON Foundation)

Sustainability, accessibility and health-equity are guiding principles.

We seek to FIT IN with school-curriculum priorities and to support socially responsible initiatives that help school wellness policies to come alive!  We strive for broad engagement of teachers, parents and community groups, because environmental change to prevent childhood obesity is a complex issue.

Welcome to Version 1.0 of our NEW website. We want to make it “come alive”, with your input to add and improve. Join us to help us make this a living place!
